After the first deadline: a practical checklist for the weeks ahead

The 30 October appointment date for larger businesses has passed. Here is what each group of businesses should be doing between now and go-live.

The first appointment date in the UAE e-invoicing timeline has now passed. Businesses with revenue of AED 50 million or more were due to appoint a provider by 30 October 2026, and they go live on 1 January 2027. Businesses below that size appoint by 31 March 2027 and go live on 1 July 2027. Government entities go live by 1 October 2027.

For larger businesses, the weeks to January are about readiness rather than choice. A sensible order of work is:

  • Confirm in writing that your appointment is in place and who inside your company owns the project.
  • Check that customer and supplier master data is complete, including tax registration numbers and addresses, because every invoice will carry them.
  • Test invoices from your accounting or ERP system end to end before 1 January, and decide who deals with a rejected invoice.
  • Keep records in line with the Tax Procedures Law. Ministerial Decision No. 197 of 2026 now ties retention to that law and removes the requirement that data be stored within the UAE.
  • Check whether you issue invoices between members of the same Tax Group. The same decision excludes these transactions for 24 months from 1 January 2027.

For smaller businesses, the March 2027 date looks distant but is not. Use the time to clean your data, list the systems that issue invoices, and ask your accountant or IT adviser what needs to change.

All businesses should also know the cost of getting it wrong. The Ministry of Finance has said the penalty for non-compliance with implementation obligations is AED 5,000 for the first violation, then AED 5,000 per month or part of a month, capped at AED 50,000 in any twelve consecutive months.

In short, a UAE business that starts its data checks and invoice tests now will reach its own go-live date with time to fix problems, rather than meeting them on the first day.
